she said she's not muslim and wears a scarf to protect her head from the sun. >> there is ignorance out there and i think it's important to be vigilant, more vigilant now especially in this heated climate. >> east bay police are investigating the break-in as a hate crime even though she is not muslim: council of american islam relations said this is the third incident. a muslim woman said she was walking on the uc berkley campus when someone threatened to pull off her hijab. a bay area man is heading to court accused of trafficking. 24-year-old is charged with kidnapping -- authorities say after picking up the young woman he told her, quote, i'm

kidnapping you. he forced the woman to perform sex acts for money in oakland. happening today, president- elect donald trump meets today in new york with japanese prime minister shinzo abe. at the airport in tokyo before flying to the u.s., the japanese prime minister said he wants to build trust with trump. during the campaign, donald trump threatened to withdraw american troops from japan and south korea unless they paid more of the cost of keeping american troops based in their countries. this will be trump's first meeting with the foreign leader as the president-elect. donald trump's team is pushing back against reports the presidential transition reports is in disarray. plus, hillary clinton made her first public comments since she conceded last week's election. doug lu saidz zader has more. >> reporter: the hiring

cotton. hillary clinton made her first public remarks in washington speaking at a children's defense fund event. >> there have been a few times this past week when all i wanted to do is just to curl up with a good book or our dogs and never leave the house again. >> reporter: and there are plenty of names we know of that the incoming trump administration may be considering for key posts but remember, trump ran as an outsider, so there may be some real surprises along the way. in washington, doug luzader, fox news. hundreds of people marched in los angeles last night protesting the appointment of steve bannon as donald trump's chief strategyist. the protest started on the los angeles city hall steps. bannon is the executive chairman of bright bart news, a conservative website. time now 5:06. today, president is obama meeting with german chancellor

angela merkel. the president is on the final foreign tour of his presidency. mr. obama is trying to reassure u.s. allies that president- elect trump will honor prior commitments. he'll meet with the leaders of france, italy, spain and britain. the uc regents meet again today. the agenda includes a proposed tuition increase and it would be the first tuition hike in three years. students say many of them are struggling to pay for basic needs as it is. the final decision is not expected until january at the earliest. attorneys for 10 tech workers at ucfmedical center have taken steps toward a lawsuit saying the university is illegally outsourcing jobs. about 80 employees are being laid off since many of its i.t. jobs went to india. the workers accuse the university of age discrimination, violating the

h1 b visa program since someone of the indian workers will be granted visas to work. they raise concerns about potential data breaches. >> patients should be aware, there should be full disclosure to all patients that foreigners have access to their health information, it's important we let them know. >> the workers' attorney said if the legal action fails, he believes the practice of outsourcing these i.t. jobs will spread to other uc campuses and hospitals. the university says the move will save $30 million over five years. california appeals court heard arguments over the proposed new warriors arena to be built in san francisco. the lawsuit was filed by the mission bay alliance which opposes the $1 billion project. it arrests that the city broke zoning and environmental laws by pushing through an environmental review. opponents also say traffic jams could block ambulances trying to reach the uc hospital nearby

but superior court previously upheld the approval process. the warriors hope to have the arena open for the 2019 season. our time is 5:09. there's anger after one of last week's students protests against crump. coming up at 5:30, the concerns of antioch police chief of a principal that marched with his students. more than 150 hertz workers at,fo may be out -- at sfo. the circumstances of the layoffs that have them calling for a boycott.

welcome back to mornings on 2. police from kosovo have foiled attacks. authorities arrested 18 people and six more in neighboring albania in the past two weeks. the police say the suspects were in contact with an isis member who declared himself as commander of albania of sirra and -- syria and attack. time is 5:12. we have new information about the deadly commuter train crash in new jersey in september. investigators say the train conductor suffered from undiagnosed sleep apnea, a

sleeping disorder that can cause drowsiness. investigators are looking at that as a potential cause of the crash. one with him was killed, 100 others -- woman was killed, 100 others were hurt. one person has been arrested now in the murder and robbery of a bay area pot farmer in mend seeno county. 24-year-old zachary weister. investigators say he took part in the killing. sheriff's officials identified five more people, five other men and a woman, wanted in this case. it's believed they headed to southern california or left california entirely. investigators say the suspects were hired to trim marijuana plants and they stole about 100 pounds of marijuana after the killing. they were seen leaving in at least two cars. the sheriff's department issued these photos of what those

vehicles may look like. one of them is a white 1999 honda accord, california license plate 7 lpn823. the other is a blue 2005 volvo xc-70, california license plate 7tv. 150 hertz workers lost their job last week. workers walked off their jobs and held a rally at city hall. they received support from the chai these progressive association. the nonprofit board of supervisors and the teamsteres alltel us they have reached out to hertz but have not been able to get company officials to come to the table to talk. >> it's shameful for a company

to treat immigrant workers in this way. >> the layoff -- in the layoff notice, hertz did not give a reason for the job cuts. it only said it's due to a change in business operation. the layoffs are permanent and future hiring decisions will be made exclusively by a vendor. time now 5:15, happening today a new chick-fil-a restaurant in pleasanton is giving away free food. people have pitched tents out side the restaurant. the first 100 customers win free chick-fil-a for a year when the restaurant opens at 6 a.m. they'll actually get a digital discount card. it will be loaded with 52 free meals that include a chicken sandwich, medium waffle fries, and a medium drink. chick fill kay has been doing this for 13 years, giving away about $27 million in free food. >> hopefully some college students that we talked about who need the help are there

able to get that. 5:16 is the time right now. sal, are you looking in at gilroy, the super commute? >> that's right. people who drive, pam and dave, from gilroy and drive to san jose, somewhat of a long distance, people get up early to do it and we're watching that commute for you from gilroy to san jose, as you said, and driving through morgan hill. it still looks pretty good. later the commute gets busy but right now it does look good all the way to the silicon valley. that silicon valley commute starts later than some other commutes. for example, highway 4 comes to mind, it starts early. speaking of highway 4, let's take a look at that. we already have some crowded conditions. in antioch, pittsburg and bay point. at the bay bridge, we don't have a big crowd. usually about 5:30 is when we start noticing the crowd after they start turning the metering lights on. good morning, everybody. it's a cold one out there.

but now the employee-owned waste company is using a $11.5 million machine that uses small tufts of air to retrieve plastic that can be reused. the job is helping workers and not replacing them. >> there's about 175 people that work down here and nobody lost their job because of the machinery. the machinery is just helping us do a better job with what we were already doing. >> now, re-cology said it keeps seven tractor trailer loads of repsychable materials out of land fills every year and other places are coming to take a look at the machine. a 5-year-old cancer survivor is now giving hope to other children who are going through the same ordeal that she went through. her name is giselle contreras. what ktvu's ann rubin shows us, they call her wonder girl at

lucille packer children's hospital. >> reporter: for her fifth birthday, giselle contreras got some great gifts, gifts she now plans to give away. >> she said these would give a big smile to my cancer friends and today that's what we're doing. >> reporter: it was on her birthday two years ago, she got something they never wanted, a cancer diagnosis. the family knowing what super strength it would take to fight it started calling her wonder girl. they raised nearly $5,000 this year. >> it shows she truly is special. she really does think about other kids and is more aware of what's going on. >> reporter: on the day giselle came for her very last doctor's appointment, the family presented the check to lucille packer children's hospital to thank the stenograph. staff. the family hopes the money will go to research new treatment

for childhood leukemia, something giselle said shield like to see right away. >> we talk to them at their age and tell them, understand it's not immediate but down the line, the money she raises is going to help someone else. >> reporter: giselle wanted to make an impact now so she decided to give away her birthday presents. somehow a manager at target found out. >> we have toys and i think we've run out of space. >> reporter: in fact, all the target stores in san jose banded together to donate a $1500 shopping spree and giselle believes she's picked out some toys kids in the cancer ward would like. giselle's family said this is the least they can do. >> my heart is full and i want to give back and give back to this hospital that did so much for us and for our family. >> reporter: while the cancer treatment is over, the fundraising is not. giselle and her family are already talking about how they can raise money next. in paolo alto, ann rubin, ktvu

news. today is world prematurity today, raiseings awareness about preterm birth. researchers at ucsf have developed a blood test to determine if a woman is at risk for premature babies with information from the markers in the blood. the hope is, this test will lead to intervention early in the pregnancy and prevent a preterm birth. babies that are born too soon have a more -- higher risk of brain damage along with vision, hearing and breathing problems. time is 5:26. a controversy at a bay area high school. the parts of a donald trump lesson plan by one san francisco teacher that are being scrutinized. >> the chpd is helping track down a car that hit and killed a man early this morning. we are live in san jose.

30s and 40s on the temps and very cool readings already. we still have a ways to go. we'll see some -- i would not be surprised to get a couple upper 20s. that would not surprise me in the least. frost advisory until 8 a.m. for some but suffice to say, it's pretty cold. upper 50s, low 60s. looks like a lot of sunshine and a slight easterly breeze takes some of the cold inland air and moves it back toward the bay. 34 livermore, danville 33, mid- 30s for walnut creek, 38 in concord. so it's a cold one. it looks good, though, sunshine. sunny but cool. no problems, sunny and cool. frost advisory cold again tonight, 60s on the highs today. >> all right, sal, metering lights clicking on? >> they are clicking on and we have slow traffic in heyward and some areas of contra costa county.

we'll start on solano county's commute, we see traffic heavy on 80 and vacaville and fairfield. stop and go driving into vallejo, getting to the bridge there, you can see traffic at the cordelia junction hasn't been that bad. as a matter of fact, traffic splitting off to 680 and 880 is looking good. i want to mention, slow traffic in heyward, a number of crashes and a car fire have combined to cause an early morning back-up here as you drive on 880 southbound. don't let this catch you by surprise. it's backing up almost but not quite into oakland. these crashes aren't that serious, but just having so many of them in the same spot has made the commute slow. let's take a look at 880 in oakland. you can see so far 880 in oakland is not affected as we mentioned. at the bay bridge toll plaza, the metering lights switched on and now traffic is busy at the toll plaza, about a 10-minute delay before you make it on the

bridge. 5:31, a section of highway 101 was shut down overnight because of a deadly accident in the overnight showers. ktvu's janine de la vega is there to tell us what happened. >> reporter: the chpd doesn't have much to go on. they searched the area for vehicle debris and they are asking for the publics help. they think right before 1:15 this morning, a vek hit a pedestrian on southbound 101. a man was found laying on the tully onramp. he was pronounced dead on the scene. it appears the man was hit by a vehicle that fled the scene. >> we think it's a vehicular hit-and-run. we don't have any follow-up currently, but if anyone was in the area around that time, if they can please call their local chp office and provide details, it would be greatly

appreciated. >> reporter: a portion of southbound 101 was closed for a couple of hours while officers investigated but it's now coach. open. the only information we know is he was a man in his mid to late 40s. it was unknown what he was doing here near the freeway on ramp. >> thank you. time now 5:33. san francisco police investigating a shooting near delores park that injured a man. it happened tuesday night on hancock and 18th. police say the victim was a 20- year-old man. he's expected to be okay. witnesses say they heard an argument by a parked car and then ducked for cover when the shooting started. no arrests have been made so far. happening today, the public will have a chance to give input on reforms proposed by the u.s. justice department for san francisco police following a series of deadly police shootings. now, federal authorities released a report last month that concluded the department does not properly investigate the use of force by officers.

recommendations include better training for officers and upgrades to outdated information technology systems. the report also said officers should be equipped with stun guns. now, today's meeting is organized by the san francisco human rights commission. it will be held at the usf mcclaren conference center on fulton street. the meeting begins at 4:30 this afternoon. oakland mayor libby schaaf said the search for the new police chief is ongoing. oakland held 10 community meetings to get input from residents first. it found the top three qualities people are looking nor in a chief, integrity, being a change-maker and a record of reducing crime. oakland has been without a permanent chief since june. time is now 5:34. after donald trump's election victory students at santa clara university plan to walk out

this afternoon to show solidarity with undocumented immigrant students. there's a campaign around the country to make colleges a sanctuary campus. about 500 students and faculty -- the chancellor is vowing its schools will provide a safe environment for the students in the u.s. illegally. but there's concern when donald trump becomes president in january, his administration will deport tens of thousands of undocumented students. the antioch police chief and the principal of high school have differing accounts about last thursdays student protests against the election of donald trump. about 200 pittsburg high students marched off campus and into the neighboring city of antioch. antioch's police chief said three pittsburg students were arrested, one more throwing something at a police officer. while the chief praised antioch high school administrators from preventing students from joining in the march, he did

question the role of pittsburg high school's principal. >> do they really want the high school principal walking with truants leaving the campus? and if so, what did they hope he will be able to do? in this instance he did nothing when the officer was assaulted. >> i'm not sure having not having anybody there from the school, i don't know if that would helpful. >> the principal said he and two other school district staff members accompanied the students trying to de-escalate the situation and they kept students from entering businesses and causing other problems. there's controversy surrounding a lesson plan for high school teachers in san francisco that blasted donald trump. now, fakrah shah created a guide for students to process the election and the fallout from donald trump's victory. the resource plan labeled the president-elect as quote a racist and sexist man.

>> as educators, we are first impulse is to provide the children with a save space in which to deal with their feelings and make sense out of the world. that's what this lesson plan is about. >> the san francisco republican party calls it inappropriate and said that unfairly demonizes trump and all the people that voted for him. the school district issued a response which reads in part, quote, the mission high school plan like many has been circulated as an option for high school teachers it is not part of the official district curriculum. the teachers union does not dictate san francisco curriculum. time is 5:37. go 18-year-old boys were arrested for vanedlizing a theater at santa rosa high school. the two can be seen trashing the theater in a snapchat post and that ultimately led to air arrest. the vandalism happened days before the theater's opening night fall play.

the school received about $2,000 in donations after the vandalism. both are boys, they're graduates of the rival montgomery high school but police say they don't believe that had anything to do with the vandalism. it's a long road to recovery continuing for a shoe shine worker in san francisco. he was seriously injured back in august when a runaway cab jumped a curb on market street. >> reporter: in a sea of motion where market and sutter meet, he had an oasis. >> it was a lovely energy. it was just like calm. >> reporter: a kiosk where she sells jewelry she makes and a shoe shine stand she rented to her friend. >> without him, it won't be the same. >> reporter: they have been hospitalized most of the past three months after a cab barrelled on to the stand at

high speed, throwing them into the air. bay says he remembers it all clearly. >> it happened so fast. sound like a bomb, boom! next thing i know, i'm up in the air, landed over there. >> reporter: both men have had multiple major surgeries. mr. salim as his customers know him visits when he can get a ride from his rehabilitation hospital. >> they know i'm back and i want to come back as soon as possible so we can get this thing rolling again. >> reporter: a new booth was built and installed last month. >> we're halfway there. not all the way. we'll be all the way when he comes back. >> reporter: it's uncertain if bay will be able to work again although people keep asking. >> they want to know how is he doing, when he is coming back. >> reporter: salim had a ready smile for anyone passing by. >> they know his spirit.

welcome back this morning. we want to check in with sal for a look at traffic. it's about 5:42. how does it look out there? >> we have a new collision, pam and dave, northbound 880 and seems to be very serious at 237. it's blocking most of the freeway.

they've issued an sig alert thinking it's going to be blocking all lanes though sometimes they let some cars through. but this crash is now an injury accident on northbound 880 as you drive up on 237. now, this may affect the commute direction, which is southbound 880, so we're keeping a close eye on it for you. and i want to let you know that again, northbound 880 coming from san jose driving up toward fremont, if you drive on 880 and past 237, that's where the crash is. and it sounds rather serious. also just want to mention that the tracy commute is slow, slow at its usual spot over the altamont pass. there's nothing unusual about the blackup. it gets better in livermore. southbound 880 through oakland is going to be super slow as you drive -- i'm sorry, through heyward is going to be super slow after a string of accidents there approaching 92 and 238 out of castro valley is

a mess. this is a look at the bay bridge toll plaza, already a lot of slow traffic here approaching the metering lights, which switched on at about 5:30. today's weather, let's go to steve. thank you, sal. it's a cold one out there. had a report from a viewer in livermore hills, 28 degrees, so there are a few. we thought we would see a couple. i know there's some up toward lake county as well. it will be a lovely day, just not very warm. we are starting off in the 30s, even berkley is at 42 degrees. if there's a puff of a breeze, it might hold some of your temps up. there are locations running to five, six, 10 degrees colder than 24 hours ago. lots of sunshine today. frost advisory until 8:00 for some. we get an offshore breeze so it takes the cold inland air and takes it in.

stanford, los altos, menlo park is at 37. san mateo, 47. morgan hill, gilroy, there are many locations that are colder than that but those observations show 30s. same from boulder creek, up in santa cruz mountains, scotts valley and so cal, santa cruz at 42, low 40s camp billion. 12 keeps getting colder up there in truckee, 25 in reno. 44 even monterey, santa bauer ra, 47 -- santa barbara, 47, that's cold for them. we do have mostly clear skies. our system is till still on tap for saturday. it does not look like a big producer but a steady producer. today, patchy frost, cold, sunny, cool, it will be nice.

they're all asking me, of course, because i have that inside track to the weather. >> you do, who? where? let me talk to that person. >> exactly. all right, well, really, crazy story, one person killed in a natural gas explosion in central illinois last night, surveillance video shows this. take a look for a second. the store windows shatter there. several buildings were actually levelled. 10 other people were hurt in the explosion. people living in nearby apartments had to evacuate, again this is in canton, illinois. one person was killed and authorities are still trying to figure out what caused that blast. >> wow. we do have a happy ending back here, a specially-equipped car that was stolen from a paralyzed student in the south bay has been found. kendra posted this on her facebook page. someone spotted her van near the board walk in santa cruz and called police. she's paralyzed from the waist

down. her special car has special controls. it was stolen friday from her family's home in scotts valley. she said is feels great to have it back and have her independence back and she said thank you to ktvu because we told her story. so far, though, no arrests have been made. guess what's happening today? in just a few hours from now, about 30 dogs from an east bay animal shelter will be on their way to new homes in minnesota. they will be loaded up into a van and taken to the sacramento airport where they will be loaded on a delta flight to minnesota. overcrowding is a problem for the shelter but the shelter in minnesota said it already has homes lined up for the cute little dogs. that's nice. i like to hear that. we'll take a break. we'll be right back.

welcome back to mornings on 2. our time is 5:51. we're going to check in on traffic again. we're doing several things right now but we want to check back with sal to see how our commute is doing and working, if you're there? >> he's had a few problems this morning. >> all of a sudden, 880 is the place not to be because we have two crashes. the first one 880 southbound as you drive from san leandro down

to 8th street and heyward, there's a crash there and traffic is going to be slow out of san leandro. the most serious crash is southbound 880 at eighth street and the traffic will be backed up from marine boulevard all the way down and people are yam packed -- jam packed. one of our crews tell us they're not moving at all. they're creeping along very slowly. 238 is also slow coming in from castro valley. we're going to go to another crash. sorry, i just built these graphics a moment ago. i'm going to manually drag the map. northbound 880 as you drive up to 237, there is an injury crash there. that one is nearly blocking all of the lanes. now, this is in the non-commute direction for most people but it's going to catch you by surprise if you're trying to drive from san jose to fremont, you're going to be stuck in traffic.

southbound 880 in heyward and northbound 880 in milpitas are good areas to avoid. this is a look at the bay bridge, traffic is moving look okay but there's a delay at the pol getting on to the span itself. this is a look at 880 in oakland. 880 in oakland is so far not affected by the trouble on southbound 880 in heyward. this is a look at the bay bridge toll plaza and you can see the traffic is backed up for a 15 to 20-minute delay. let's go to steve. thank you, sal. good morning, everybody. it's a cold one out there. frost advisories out until 8:00. it will be a sunny day, it will be nice, upper 50s, low 60s, let's face it, the nights are very long, days are short, so even with the sunshine it's not going to stay very warm very long. 42 in berkley, 43 at half moon bay.

that's one observation in paolo alto, there are many others there close by in the 30s. sunshine aplenty once we get cranked up. clouds up on the north coast. we had the onshore breeze for a couple of days. now, that's turned a little offshore so that brings some of those cold lows back toward the bay. 33 northwest napa, 39 in mill valley. petaluma is in there, 33. heedsburg upper 30 and 44 at point rays. east bay temps, lots of 30s as well. there are a reports of low to mid-30s around livermore. blackhawk is in there, says, we're 33, beat that. so far we can't. 30s for lafayette, san ramone, dublin and pleasanton, your

federal law, including current drug laws. marijuana is still illegal under federal law. the possession, use and growth of marijuana will be prohibited on campus. this morning in san francisco, crews will be out to start plafg parts of ocean beach -- replacing ocean beach that's been eroding. sands will be moved from north of the beach. the ocean has been eating away at that southern end of ocean beach. the work is expected to shut down at least one southbound lane on the great highway weekdays through next month. the work today is due to start at 7:00 this morning. we are coming up on our of o'clock hour. we're covering a -- on our 6:00 hour. we're covering a number of stories and of course, some controversy over what teachers are telling kids, students at school about the election. we'll be right back.
